The MAG weekly Blog by Lydia, every Friday 1700 hrs. Nr 56 14th July 2023
A MAG is a Modern African Girl, so no subject is taboo. My purpose is to share things which may interest a MAG.
This week's contributors: Lydia, Doré Fasolati, this week's subjects: Sweaters are your best friend , 233 Jazz Club and Grill, Changing Hubbies Character, Sponsors for sports events.
Sweaters are your best friend. Sweaters are meant to keep you warm in the cold. A sweatshirt is also meant to keep you warm, although that's not its only purpose. Along with keeping one warm, they also absorb sweat. This makes them a go-to choice for athletes and fitness enthusiasts hence becoming a mainstream everyday item. The first traces of the knitted sweater as we know it come from Muslim knitters employed by Spanish royal families in Europe during the mid-13th century. A painting titled Our Lady Knitting by Tommaso da Modena (circa 1350) depicts a red sweater being stitched with needles.
The knitted garments were made by the wives of fishermen and sailors from natural wool, which, by retaining its oil, protected against the cold even when damp. The use of the Jersey spread throughout Europe, especially among working men. In the 1890s it was adopted by athletes in the United States and called a sweater. However, towards the end of the 19th century, it began to have wider appeal.
Here’s some benefits of wearing sweater's;
• It’s comfortable. The softness of knits makes them perfect for traveling.
• It's low maintenance ...
• It's wrinkle resistant ...
• It packs well in your suitcase ...
• It’s versatile and easy chic.
• Sweater sets are classic, always in style! They pull an outfit together giving you a finished look.
233 Jazz Club and Grill in Accra remains a reference, and the recent performance there of saxophonist Jeff Kashiwa is another example of bringing us musicians worth listening to, at a reasonable entrance fee. One of the things I really appreciate there is the quality of the sound, they employ a sound engineer who knows his stuff. One can also have a bite there, good kebabs, pizzas and of course the usual rice with chicken and chicken with rice. Unfortunately, the sound engineer must have been on leave and the bass speakers were really disturbing. The kebab man too must have left, the usual juicy pork kebab was not available and their dried-out beef kebab is not worth it. As for the pizzas? Hmm, non-crispy bottom with cheese spread on it. Sorry, I hope they get back to their original standards, it's a nice place which I used to recommend.
Changing Hubbies Character. I hope you have meanwhile made progress and are now dating someone, but of course, he and no one is perfect. But one should not be too critical, and with a bit of effort, he can learn or unlearn certain things. Wrong. He will not change. He can change on the outside, but not inside. His basic character was already formed before the age of 9, and the person will not really change thereafter, no matter how he tries. So if he constantly has little lies not worth lying about, or always wears dirty clothing, or looks for more food in his nose whilst you are having dinner, well, that's it. Either you accept and can’t be bothered, or this will eventually become a major issue. No matter how many times a snake sheds its skin it will always be a snake
Sponsors for sports events. If you're interested you have maybe watched part of Roland-Garros or Wimbledon and seen the tennis players carrying huge bags for their gear. The bag in question was a Gucci bag. Gucci bags start at about 1200$, their most expensive bag currently is the Gucci Bamboo 1947 crocodile top handle bag @ $52,000. Relatively cheap for the bag world, earlier I mentioned the Mouawad 1001 Nights diamond purse @ 3.8 m USD! But it is nice of Gucci to sponsor and advertise, that gives us a chance to watch tennis free of charge. But there is a little hitch. Like TikTok and Instagram and so many free platforms, it's mostly advertising income that keeps these platforms going. And same goes for tennis platforms or football platforms and most of the others. It's all paid for from advertising (and a few tickets and T-shirts sold). So the reality is that someone organizes an advertising platform, as a business, and to get you to watch that advertising platform they put content that may interest you. If it does not really interest you they'll create so much publicity around it that you end up becoming interested and start watching. Watching the advertising platform. You've been tricked.
