African fashion is on the rise to go to the top of the global luxury fashion market and I want to acknowledge some of our talented designers who are putting us on this world map.

We should be proud of the likes of South African David Tlale, Nigerian Mai Atafo, and our own Ghanaian Duaba Serwaa, Christy Brown and Joyce Ababio. The list is endless, see this article as an opener.

Every fashion designer puts lots of efforts, energy and love into each custom made design. From the sketch board to pattern drafting to sampling to actual design is a lot of work. Let’s give our designers some accolades because it’s not easy. Not forgetting the team involved in the production processes, from working late to sacrificing their weekends and holidays to bring that masterpiece to life.

Luckily our melanin skin goes well with almost every color when worn right. From our traditional kente, batakari and batik to our borrowed western fabric tailored costumes.

Unfortunately, since the adoption of western outfits in our workplaces Fridays and weekends only are the better days to view African fashion; at traditional weddings and naming ceremonies to family gatherings and other events and even funerals we go back to our roots and show that we are far more fashion conscious than we care to acknowledge.

Ghana seems to small for our many fashion stars, so we see many of them “outside”, rather than back home. Virgil Abloh (1980-2021 (cancer, not the so common drugs)) was born in the USA from Ghanaian parents and after a chequered career as DJ, Radio presenter, architect, music producer, CD sleeve designer and more he eventually became the first black luxury menswear director at major French fashion house Louis Vuiton.

An exhibition called “Figures of Speach” is now held at the Brooklyn Museum, New York's second largest museum, about 2 decades of his works. A special edition of the accompanying exhibition catalogue is going forbetween 500 and 1400 Euros, about 5,000 to 14,000 GHS. if you can't afford that there is the not so special edition at 80 Euro.

There's money in fashion and art

Abloh also founded the Milan-based fashion label Off-White and in 2018 he was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine. His story is too long for this blog, search him on the net for more.

And there is also our Edward Kobina Enninful, since 2017 the Ghanaian editor-in-chief of British Vogue, a leading fashion magazine. At age 18 he was appointed fashion director of British fashion magazine i-D, a position he held for more than two decades. He then became Contributing Fashion Editor at Vogue Italia and American Vogue, before he moved to Vogue UK.

America's Got Talent? Yeah, Ghana got talent too.

Linda Evangelista, super model and now 57, recently showed up on the catwalk of the New York Fashion Week, after 15 years of absence.  She is a Canadian fashion model and one of the top supermodels of the 90's. She is regarded as one of the most accomplished and influential models of all times, and has been featured on over 700 magazine covers. She is worth about 40 million Canadian Dollars.

Never say die

Gold again. Often gold chains or hangers we wear have very thin lockers and segments, and as mentioned earlier, because gold is relatively soft, these parts wear out. So it makes sense to check these wearing parts from time to time or one day you may find that your chain or locker is no more with you. If it is just one or 2 places that are worn out you can ask your jeweler to weld a bit of gold onto it, to make that worn out part thicker again. Or, just ask the jeweler to melt the chain down and make something else out if it. It's not only cars that need maintenance.

Fat Fish Restaurant, one of the few restaurants in Accra worth visiting, has closed. Rumour has it there was trouble with the landlord, and I would not be surprised, personally I experienced many times that taxis were not allowed to drop you off in front of the entrance, which is awkward if you wear 8 inch stilettos. Shame, it was a good restaurant and I do hope to see Carl Chapman, the chief cook, again.

Talking about weekends, there are some real idiots out there, and they like to put things in your drinks which make you loose control of yourself so they can do with you what they like. What a fun. But watch out, some people are really mentally sick. The phenomena is not Ghana only, it is world wide. At a recent carnival in Southern Europe the local AMA distributed 15,000  anti-drug drinking glass covers, free of charge.

Cheating at chess. How do you cheat at chess? By running computer programs, called chess engines, which will suggest the moves that most likely will be the most favourable.  But you are not allowed to do that during a competition. So you need an outsider to assist you, which is also not allowed. So you need to communicate secretly with the outsider. So before a big championship the players are actually searched for hidden communication devices.

Despite all these measures, recently Magnus Carlsen, Norwegian World Chess Championship winner, withdrew from the Sinquefield Cup after losing to upstart Hans Niemann. And rumour has it that Mr Niemann communicated through anal balls.

Any questions?
